Leaf Workflows
Leaf supports working with different remotes or streams of packages.
Not all versions of Legato are used by Products to produce an officially supported version of a Legato Platform. To help determine what version of a package you should be using when we use the concept of streams.
Release Workflows
Stable Releases
A module will produce an officially supported release, which contain:
- A version of Legato as both the pre-built and a System Image
- Linux distribution system image
- Modem Firmware Images
- A toolchain to enable further development by customers
- Recovery and Image creation tools
These are packaged together as a Leaf package tagged as a stable release and are supported by the module vendors.
Development Releases
The Legato team will push out new releases and updates to existing Legato code. While these may not be officially supported by the target vendors the Legato Team tests the releases thoroughly before they are posted.
The Legato Team produces dev releases, which contain:
- A newer version of Legato
- Linux distribution from the last stable release
- Modem Firmware from the last stable release
- Tool chain from the last stable release
- Recovery and Image creation tools
Each module's version of stable or dev releases may contain different versions of Legato and the Linux Distribution. i.e.; A wp76 module may use Legato version xx.xx and it's associated firmware and Linux distribution for it's stable release, where as the wp85 may use Legato version yy.yy and it's associated firmware and Linux distribution for the wp85 stable release.
If you want to know exactly what what in each leaf package, use -v
with leaf
search
and a package identifier. leaf
search
-v
<package identifier>="">.
Versioning
Leaf packages follow the Semantic Versioning Scheme of MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH:
- The MAJOR version increments when the target vendor releases a new stable release
- The MINOR version increments when the Legato Team publishes a new dev release
- If either the target vendor or the Legato Team publishes a patch the PATCH version increments.
Additional labels such as RCs are also available as extensions but generally are not published to the general public.
Remotes
Legato Leaf remotes will either point to all streams (both dev and stable) or you can choose a remote that only lists the stable releases. This means that you will only get the option of downloading and installing stable releases onto your development machine.
You may also add multiple remotes and enable and disable them as needed.
$ leaf remote enable <remote alias> $ leaf remote disable <remote alias>
Hierarchy
The Leaf workflow design includes a hierarchy and is setup with the first install of a leaf package:
USER
(universal config for all workspace and profiles)WORKSPACE
(the working directory for your code and your customization)PROFILE
(target/version specific configuration and settings)
The USER config is where things like your Source Code Repo user ID is stored (see leaf help getsrc), as well as the list of remotes that you are connected to and any environment variables (see leaf help env) that you wish to be available to any leaf workspace on your machine.
The user config file is default located in ~/.config/leaf directory and is called config.json. It is not recommended that you hand edit this file instead use the leaf env, leaf config or leaf remote commands to change any configuration values in this file.
The WORKSPACE config stores configuration values that are local to the workspace directory and the profiles contained in the workspace. Each directory on your system that you turn into a leaf workspace will maintain it's own configuration. The configuration file for the workspace is called leaf-workspace.json and is stored in the workspace directory.
The PROFILE is where the leaf package gets installed to, you can have multiple profiles per workspace and this allows you to switch between different versions of Legato or use Legato with multiple targets. Installing and organizing the environment into profiles manages the toolchain and other versioned specific tools and eases the management burden on you. All configuration for the profiles is stored within the leaf-workspace.json file.
